In blockchain tech, many domains coalesce that I have worked in. I started programming age 12 hacking computer games, and always remained passionate about performance and whatever resembles 'AI'. I worked in fintech, distributed databases and functional programming, domains that are all of special significance for the future of blockchain at this point. I created a compiler and virtual machine for the insurance industry, which an eternity before it, looked eerily like Bitcoin's VM. I started programming crypto stuff a decade ago. I am evangelizer for the best distributed, high-velocity database out there, VoltDB, and suffered with them through different stabs at solving distribution. Which is what the blockchain community re-lives right now. In a way, it's all coming together for me in blockchains. I had to fall for it.“

This is a book I needed. It goes way past most of the the "intro" books that are available online. I learn best from books rather that tutorials on-line or otherwise. I would most certainly recommend this book,BUT...I am not fluent in German, however I studied German in high school and university. I should say here I am an American 3rd generation and I speak American .I have a BA in English. As such, I was required to take 18 hours of a "foreign language." Mostly I spent my time translating German literature/documents from German to English.I am speculating that this book was hurried to publication, written in German, and IMO translated by a computer. Why is this a problem? It is a problem because there are so many grammatical ambiguities from the German to the American English dialect that many sentences are either incomplete or scrambled syntactically in such a way that makes it difficult to understand. Now, if this was a work of fiction it would not be a big issue as most American readers would get the gist of what was being "told" as in telling a story. However, in this context it is a real problem.STILL, it is the best book on the subject I have read so far. I am a noob to all this. The book takes the reader beyond how to speculate and how to make money on exchanges, which seems to be the primary focus of most "for dummies" books.Mr. Dietrich, thank you for this book, But here in North America we need an American translation. It would so great to go over this book with you and to show you you how some of what you have written (or has been translated by other entities) may really confuse Americans.
The only reason this book isn't getting five stars is because it's clearly not been edited. Otherwise it's going to be one of the best books in the market. The author is deeply knowledgeable and enthusiastic on the topic, which keeps the reader engaged. He's fun to read, which is really saying something when it comes to a technical book. But: it's unedited, and the grammatical errors will detract from the perceived seriousness of the message for those who are prone to pedantry (management, engineering management, etc). Just tell them that this is an early release, and to look past that stuff. It's a good book.
This book is great!! I have been investing in the crypto market for over a year. I want to make a career as a consultant in the near future. I thought I was pretty savvy as to what it all meant. BUT I was wrong.. Ethereum is so important but This book covers everything and is so well written that even a newbie will be able to make an educated decision if they want to invest or not. Even more important, any investor needs to understand what is happening when prices fall, or what ICO events mean, block chain.etc etc.. This book is so detailed and easy to follow that I just bought another for a friend. There are times when you can tell the author is struggling to explain in simple terms and I need to read until I get where he is coming from but over all this will be my bible as I progress in the learning curve. Plus he provides his email address, welcomes any suggestions as to make the book better. He has redone it a few times since the original printing...Thank you Henning
The book is a good resource for someone who is looking for some historical context and an overview on blockchain technology. It gives you a good high-level broad brush on technology and terms. If you are looking for technical details, the books does not have them but does have information where to go find them on the internet. If you are interested in blockchain but not sure where to start, the book is worth your time to read. It is a fast reading book with some helpful call out to quickly understand the terminology used in the blockchain circles. Some reviewers have said that the content is all raw-raw blockchain and Ethereum, I would not agree with that. The Author points out limitations of blockchain and tries to call out practical use cases for the technology. The Author would like to see blockchain succeed -- Clearly, he understands the amount of hype about blockchain and cryptocurrencies. If the technology is not used appropriately, it will flame out as a technological curiosity but not ready for primetime usage. After reading the book, blockchain company white papers will be much easier to understand. Also, you should have a better context for your hype/BS filter around blockchain and Ethereum.
Good intro into Ethereum and blockchain technology. Covers all the main topics & hits the key points. I'll keep it handy for reference material and lend it out to newcomers. It seems like nobody edited the book, because there are quite a few typos and poorly written sentences. I found myself re-reading sections over and over just to understand what he's trying to say.
As someone who doesn't know much about the blockchain technology, I was hoping to learn more using this book. The structure of the book makes reading it a little confusing. At times, it seems like the author is rambling a little which makes the book harder to follow. I also didn't like that the author shamelessly praises blockchain and Ethereum in general. I guess I wanted an introduction to blockchain that's a little less biased.
A well-organized, thorough and approachable overview of the Ethereum blockchain and smart contracts. The book provides good high-level technical knowledge, while always maintaining focus on business use cases. I’d recommend this book to developers looking to get into smart contracts programming, as well as entrepreneurs, consultants, lawyers and other professionals looking to understand this important new technological frontier.
I am a financial professional, not knowing much about block chain and related issues. Very well written, clearly defined terms, even for the non-techie like myself. Enjoyed particularly how the author has pointed out the nuances among bitcon, ethereum, zcash, etc.Good balance of "dumming down" the subject matter while also being just technical enough in order to grasp the wide implications block chain may have.
