Shorman After Chess Voice magazine (1968-1985) ceased publication and left a void in Northern California chess, Hans Poschmann stepped up to create and edit the California Chess Journal (1986-2004). The August-September 1993 article on the 1993 U.S. Junior Championship reported that U.C. Berkeley student, Valdis Saulespurens (USCF 2165) won on tie-break over Andy McManus (USCF 2349). The October-November issue started off with an article by Randy Mont-Reynaud entitled, 'Jordy Mont-Reynaud Wins Silver Medal in Boys-Under-10 World Championship', followed by an article about GM Nick deFirmian winning the Northern California State Championship. The April-May 1994 periodical had a photo and the comment on the front cover, "Jordy Mont-Reynaud, 10, and becomes the youngest USCF-rated master in U.S. history, breaking Fischer's record." and an inside article about GM Walter Browne winning the 1993 U.S. Game-in-Fifteen Championship, held in Sacramento. The August-September publication had an article about the 1994 NorCal Scholastic Championship. 1st in K-6, Micah Fisher-Kirshner (1717) tied with Joe Lonsdale, Jr. (1659) 1st in 7-8, Mark Dean (1535) 1st in 9-12, Dmitry Ziberstein The issue also had an article by Joe Lonsdale Sr. on the 1994 National Elementary Chess Championship held in San Jose. The article didn't have the full results, but according to Joe, it was the largest tournament in Northern California history. The October-December 1994 periodical changed hands again; FM Eric Schiller became the new Editor-in-Chief. Articles for the publication included the results for the CalChess Championship; Burt Izumikawa and Alan Stein tied for first in the Master Section and 'Vinay Bhat: The Story So Far', about Vinay becoming the youngest master in U.S. history. The March-April 1995 issue which had coverage on the Pan-Pacific Invitational won by Victor Korchnoi and the first CalChess Rating List changed hands again. FM Jim Eade became the Editor. The May-June periodical had an article entitled, 'Mindscape Chessmaster Youth Challenge'. The double round-robin between Chessmaster 4000 Turbo, Jordy Mont-Reynaud, Vinay Bhat, and Jennifer Frenklakh was won by Vinay Bhat. The August 1995 publication featured the United States Open held in Concord won by GM Alex Yermolinsky. Winter 1996 had an article on GM Pavel Blatny winning the 1995 State Championship; Eric Schiller who tied for second, a California native, won the Northern California Championship on tiebreak over Burt Izumikawa. The Spring 1996 issue had an article on the State Scholastic Championship. 1st in Elementary, Robert Chan (1031) 1st in Junior High, William Surlow (1902) tied with Eric Lin (1413) 1st in High School, Dimitry Silberstein (2314)
