An amazing book giving insight into a Navajo woman who defied tradition and became a renown surgeon. She has also set-up programs around the country at different colleges to encourage the enrollment and retention of Native Americas. The story is well-written and with insight into the Navajo world. The author has combined the learning of western medicine with Navajo culture and traditions in a most-positive way and offers suggestions as to how physicians can combine traditional medicine with western medicine.

Dr. Arviso Alvord incorporates the wisdom of traditional healing with western medicine. Her story about how the hantavirus was found when the CDC could not find the vector for the disease is very much reason to keep contact with traditional healers around the world and to refrain from the reductionistic and often dismissive nature of western medicine's approach to healing.

Wow! What a great book. If you wanted to learn about how cultures conflict and how a person was able to utilize the differences into becoming a better physician, this is the book to show you. I am very, very pleased with this purchase. Thank you Dr. Arviso for a wonderful book and a great learning experience.

[Non-fiction] This is an inciteful, first person account by Dr. Lori Arviso Alvordthe of her professional journey toward becoming the first Navajo woman surgeon and her experiences as a practicing physician. It is thoughtful, rendering a picture of contrasts between two cultures and suggesting a constructive blending of traditional healing and western medicine that recognizes the humanity of the patient. During my daughter's medical training, she spent a summer in the Dakotas with the Indian Health Service and I could readily hear echos of Dr. Alvord's story in my daughter's experience. At less than 200 pages, I would recommend this honest, but very pleasant, read that provides a broadening perspective.

I was very encouraged by The Scalpel and the Silver Bear. I've often felt as a patient that our healthcare system does not treat us as whole people, but rather as conditions or symptoms. And I've sometimes felt that the cures are worse than the illness. Mrs. Alvord clearly understands and appreciates that a sickness in either the mind, body or spirit will affect the whole person. I appreciate her views and how she worked to blend the two cultures in which she was raised and in which she lives. It would be wonderful if all physicians would see and treat patients in this professional, respectful way.

Had to get this book for a class... I didn't think I'd enjoy reading this book, but it was a great book and very interesting.

It is always a pleasure to read about women's determination to work in fields of their choice, regardless of the negativity that might currently exist in that area. The idea of modern medical science being blended with traditional American Indian cures is fascinating. Add to that some of the personal medical problems encountered by Dr. Alvord and her experiences and success with helping to alleviate the situation, and you have a truly exciting report. All of us can benefit from the idea of living a balanced life in harmony with the environment around us.

I finished this book in under 6 hours because it was so good. I got an A on my book report. I think every high school should have their students read this book. It has important life lessons in it.

Every time I listen to lectures delivered by Sayed Ammar I think to my self, there should be a written version of these amazing pieces of information so I can refer back to them whenever I need them. And here it is!Obviously if Sayed Ammar were to read this review, he will most probably bring an annoyed expression on his face and say "you would have all of this information if you the 'Shia' would care enough to read your own books!" :)Well that's exactly what I've started to do since a year now - I'm trying to read enough (credible) pieces of literature by various authors and reflect upon them, so that I do not die as an ignorant Shia.This book is a great resource for understanding the backgrounds and Importance of each Infallible. The book provides a brief history about their birth, growing up with their family, circumstances under which they grew up, their time of Imamate, their Imamate style, and finally how they died. After reading this book young people will realize how ignorant they've been towards their Imams. We just talk about Imam Ali b. Abi Talib (as) and Imam Hussain b. Ali (as) and how Imam Ali b. Hussein (as) cried after Karbala and that's it. We need to gain more knowledge about ALL of our Imams and let their knowledge and character be a guiding light in our lives. It is so sad to learn that so many of our Imams were ill-treated and yet they gave everything they had to Islam. So now when I go for their Ziyarah soon Insha'Allah - I won't just stand at their graves dumb struck not knowing what to think, I'll know what sacrifices they made for Allah (swt) and Islam.I have been following Sayed Ammar's lectures for a few years now, I think each of his lecture should be compiled and printed because they are very worthy of it and provide great credible references. I intend to purchase another one of his compiled speeches known as Ramadan Sermons: A Compilation of Speeches and Lectures soon Insha'Allah.Right after I finish reading Peshawar Nights: Shia Islam in Sunni Traditions by Sultanul Wa'izin Shirazi, which I'm currently hooked to.Thank you Sayed Ammar Nakshawani! Please continue your marvellous work - may Allah (swt) bless you, your family and your future generations!

Fascinating read, even if only from a historical standpoint. Many timeless lessons to be learned from the actions of the Infallibles, that can be applied to our everyday lives even in today's times.

This is a very easy read, if anyone wants to learn about the 14 Infallibles. Dr. Nakshawani goes into depth about who they were and how they contributed into islam.

I highly recommend this book which gives a lot of lessons from the life of Ahlul-Bayt (AS). These lessons are still applicable until today. Thank you Dr. Sayed Ammar for this reference.
