Stacy Palen is an award-winning professor in the Physics Department and Director of the Ott Planetarium at Weber State University. She spends much of her time thinking, teaching, and writing about the applications of science in everyday life. She received a BS degree in physics and an AB degree in feminist studies from Stanford University, and MS and PhD degrees in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California–Santa Cruz. As a graduate student she spent 13 months at the Amundsen Scott station at the South Pole in Antarctica, and has had fellowships in Chile and Brazil. She studies active galactic nuclei using optical and X-ray telescopes. At Barnard she teaches courses on astronomy, astrobiology, women and science, and polar exploration.Brad Smith is a retired professor of planetary science. He has served as an associate professor of astronomy at New Mexico State University, a professor of planetary sciences and astronomy at the University of Arizona, and as a research astronomer at the University of Hawaii. Through his interest in Solar System astronomy, he has participated as a team member or imaging team leader on several U.S. and international space missions, including Mars Mariners 6, 7, and 9; Viking; Voyagers 1 and 2; and the Soviet Vega and Phobos missions. He later turned his interest to extrasolar planetary systems, investigating circumstellar debris disks as a member of the Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS experiment team. Brad has four times been awarded the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement. He is a member of the IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature and is Chair of the Task Group for Mars Nomenclature.George Blumenthal is chancellor at the University of California–Santa Cruz, where he has been a professor of astronomy and astrophysics since 1972. Chancellor Blumenthal received his BS degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and his PhD in physics from the University of California–San Diego. Delivered on time and in great condition.As a senior in college, I've read quite a few science text books over the years. This textbook was a head ache from beginning to end. It goes on quite a few tangents, which are difficult to follow if you're in a 101 class (like I was at the time). I feel like I learned more from instructive videos online than I ever did in 11 weeks of reading this textbook. The only reason I'm giving it a 2 star rating is because the textbook was published well, good paper, good binding, and was delivered in great condition. As well as on time and by the date I needed it for class.

 This is absolutely NOT acceptable. definitely not "good" condition as it was advertised. I needed this book for school! I have homework assignments that I need this book for. Now I have to waste my time and do the whole return process and find a book that is actually readable. whoever does the quality control for this is failing at their job.

Not the best written text book needed, and there wasn't much there to help you with the example problems, if you didn't understand the first time they tell you how to solve a problem, you're doomed. I had to get a tutor to help me.Its a beautiful book, its just not...great.

Not a bad astronomy textbook. Sometimes it seems too basic from my perspective. I enjoyed reading the chapters a lot, they were interesting. And it's easy to understand if you don't really have any science background, say if you're taking astronomy as an elective to fill a science credit.

Got this for an introductory astronomy class. What I've read of it has been great. Many helpful pictures and diagrams. Good explanations in the text.

As Kama Maclean s essay shows, far from being an ancient religious festival, the Kumbh Mela, which is held every twelve years, originated as recently as the 1860s. But for Jawaharlal Nehru, Allahabad was where he was born and where he cut his political teeth; for Nayantara Sehgal, it was a model for civilized living; for Ved Mehta, it was, like other Indian cities, a jumble of British, Muslim, and Hindu influences ; for Saeed Jaffrey, it was a place where a good time could be had, while one picked up a decent education; for Gyanranjan, it was a city one could fall in love with in one s youth; and for I. The concept of Mutually Assured Destruction provoked protests and marches, and the architect of M.A.D, General Curtis LeMay, became a symbol of madness himself.

Raised during those turbulent times, most contemporary historians conclude that we were lucky to have survived. What they fail recognize is that for LeMay and the thousands of Cold War warriors who fought and won while serving in the Strategic Air Command, the proof of concept lies not in the "what if?" but in the reality, "what did." Historically, M.A.D. succeeded where appeasement, diplomacy and even hot wars failed. When The Wall came down, strength, not weakness, had prevailed.

Most of this story takes place in the Cold War trenches of the Strategic Air Command. It is about those who served and the many who died, told by someone who, as a young man, literally held the fate of all mankind within reach of a switch. More particularly, this is a story of man's interaction with two bombers that changed the course of political history, and were perhaps the most influential aircraft in the annals of aircraft development.

The author piloted and instructed in both the B-47 and the B-52, starting out as a copilot in the B-47, then aircraft commander and finally, instructor pilot in both aircraft. Jet Age Man chronicles his fifteen-year relationship with the B-47 and the aircraft the B-47 became, the B-52--a bomber still in service today.

About the Author

After winning his pilot's wings in December 1950, the author flew 28 missions as a B-29 copilot in the Korean War. His next assigned aircraft was the RB-47E six-engine jet reconnaissance bomber. During his six-year SAC assignment at Forbes AFB, Kansas, he advanced from copilot to instructor, and in 1960 transitioned to B-52s at Castle AFB, California. He, his wife and three sons moved to El Paso and later to Fort Worth, Texas where he logged over 3,000 hours as aircraft commander and instructor pilot in B-52s. In nine years he flew eighteen airborne alert missions and shuttled back and forth to the island of Guam fourteen times. He survived the Cuban Missile Crisis, nuclear ground and airborne alert, and a stint in the Vietnam War to retire from the Air Force in 1969. He and his wife of 59 years have lived in Arizona for the last 42.
